Rule 48
Period of retention of postal items sent to the return letter box

(a) According to section 35 of the Act, if the postal items received at the return letter box cannot be settled, subject to the restrictive clause (b) of section 36, the following should be done:-
(1) Undelivered ordinary letters, postal letters or airmails shall be burned after being kept for 31 days from the date of receipt.
(2) Undelivered registered letters shall be burnt after being kept for 91 days from the date of receipt.
(3) Packets of printed documents such as commercial circular price list advertisements without value shall be promptly sold as scrap paper.
(4) Other packets and daily newspapers shall be sold, burnt or disposed of as prescribed by the Director General within 31 days if not registered and within 91 days if registered.
(5) In the case of newspapers other than daily, it will be as directed by the Director General.
(6) The list of postal items for the period to be kept shall be posted on the notice board (b) Pulindas that have not been completed in accordance with section 35 of the Act, subject to the restrictive clause (b) of section 36, after stopping for 91 days, can be done according to the instructions of the Director General.
